I am glad that you are interested in HTML/XHTML. I believe that your best plan would be to learn XHTML from the start. Most platforms support some form of XHTML.

Have a look at
This will give you some perspective on the various versions of both markup systems and how they are related. There is a lot of information available about XHTML if you spend some time searching on the internet.

The argument the other way would go like this: You can find many HTML books avilable for next to nothing at thrift stores and used book stores. Once you learn HTML, nearly everything you have learned will transfer to XHTML. It's analogous to learning your first musical instrument. You might have to do plenty of work to make progress. But after you know one or two instruments well, the next one will be much easier to master.
